Adopt a Coral: Protecting the environment the Sheraton way

Imagine indulging in a luxurious holiday while doing something especially meaningful and important for the whole planet. Imagine having a whole lot of fun with your loved ones while actively taking part in protecting one of the world’s most important and vital – but also most vulnerable and endangered – ecosystems.

This is exactly what guests can do at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa. The resort team is deeply passionate about preserving the unique natural environment of the island and its surrounding sea, with a special focus on coral reefs – the very heart of the Maldives. All marine conservation initiatives at the resort are implemented in close collaboration with the renowned marine conservation organisation Reefscapers and are led on the island by Katelyn Hegarty-Kelly, who oversees and coordinates the marine conservation efforts.

As a guest of the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, you can actively engage by taking part in the resort’s Adopt a Coral programme. Under the supervision of a certified marine biologist, who shares fascinating insights about marine life in general and corals in particular, guests attach harvested coral fragments onto numbered frames. These frames are then carefully placed in the sea, where the corals grow over time – attracting increasing amounts of underwater life, providing habitats for countless species and offering natural coastal protection at the same time.
You can even dedicate your coral frame to someone special, and you will receive updates – including photos – twice a year, allowing you to follow how your own corals mature and flourish over time.

So far, around 800 coral frames have successfully been planted since the start of the programme in 2020. These frames provide valuable insights into coral reproduction and resilience, support efforts to protect reefs in the face of climate change and create an exceptionally beautiful snorkelling experience in a thriving and vibrant reef ecosystem. The area is inhabited by numerous colourful tropical fish, stingrays and even small (and completely harmless!) sharks – just a few metres away from the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa Dive Center.

So come and create unforgettable memories while helping to protect the environment by making a lasting contribution to marine conservation – on your holiday, the Sheraton way.
